In relief engraving otherwise known of as raised engraving
Often it is apparent that what a client askes for is not neccesarily, what they actually are seaking, crest and
seal engraving are very specialised, also very time consuming and extremely expensive.
Laser thechnology offers an affordable option which in the past was not practical when at a limited budget.
In relief engraving is widely used by wood carvers, who create a 3D image by painstakingly carving deeply
into the wood, and finaly removing all the outer surface, leaving the carving standing proud and raised up.
In relief engraving in precious metals, is what a true crest engraving is, though not yet possible with laser
engraving, what can be achieved is quite remarkable, and in such confines as a signet ring, vert impressive
Present the engraving machine with a .jpg image with the image to be proud in white & with fine black lines
within to define separate areas in the design, and set the whole design into a black background, the laser
will remove everything it sees in black down to the same depth (ie 0.80mm), now create a white border
surrounding the whole image and the machine will see this as the perimeter of the engraving, the result is in
effect a raised image bordered by the perimeter of the top of the signet ring, like a picture frame.
Purely as a rough guide, in relief engraving into a gents signet ring by laser costs in the region of
£145.00 similar crest engraving done by hand, through your local jewellery shop could be appx £425.00
A simple three initial entwined engraving by by laser approximately £75.00 a little more expensive than
hand engraving initials directly into a ring, vastly more expensive for a hand engraver to imitate laser design
